Walk With the Wise and Become Wise.
Vocāre – Latin. verb
Definitions:
1. to call upon
2. to call, summon
3. to name
VocareMentor is a combination of “mentor,” for the most part referring to guys in general (being a guy, I address guys mostly), and the Latin “vocare,” which means “to call” – addressing men, their lives, their dreams, their self-image, their calling.
Who better to give advice than some of the greats: in history, from Abraham Lincoln to Martin Luther King, John Adams to Teddy Roosevelt, and in culture, from John Grisham to Shakespeare, Mark Twain to Errol Flynn to Humphrey Bogart.
A lot of this site comes out of the way I grew up. My parents were divorced when I was 6 years old and I didn’t see much of my father. I idolized him, but of course I had no understanding of how the lack of his presence in my life affected every choice I made as I grew up. Much of my adult life has been attempting to sort things out and catch up.
The importance of the father or a father figure in a boy’s life cannot be overstated. And the impact of other men through each stage of life is immense.
Thus, this is what you will find here – musings, thoughts, wisdom and ideas from history and pop culture. Themes: mentors, father/son, male/female, self-discovery, courage, stepping up, friendship and more. We never stop learning. In every stage of our lives, we all need people to come along side to offer friendship, input, advice, counsel, instruction, guidance, and encouragement. My blog will cover all this – humbly offering some things to think about, and maybe with a bit of humor.
Thanks so much for following me on Cold. Interesting blog – followed.
Thanks! Enjoyed your Cold blog. Your post on Why Men Must Start Reading Fiction Again is excellent.
Thanks for stopping by my blog. Glad you liked what you saw. I am enjoying visiting yours also. I am a big fan of Ray Bradbury, too.
I enjoy your health focused blog. Easy to “digest” info. As you’ve simply stated, “Eat less; move more.”
Thanks for stopping by again and liking something, even if it was on the lighter side. BTW, I have extended my blog’s mantra to “eat less; move more; live longer.” Since that really is what it is all about. Always a pleasure to drop by Vocare Mentor and turn the pages.
I appreciate humor in all of life. That was a fun little post. – Since I first read “eat less; move more” on your blog, I’ve made it sort of a mantra for myself and repeated it several times in conversations with others. I like the addition of “live longer.” Short and to the point. Well said.
Thanks. I wish I could say I made up that phrase, but someone who wrote a post for the blog used it and I loved it. I did add the live longer, however, Very glad you like it. Words to live by …
Thanks. Pleased to have found your blog and I look forward to lots of reading. Regards from Thom at the immortal jukebox.
Great Hat!
Thanks! That pic was taken a couple of years ago. The Fedora is a favorite. One of the few hats that I found that fit my large head.
I KNOW the feeling
Thanks for liking and following my “Sweet Spots” blog and, in so doing, introducing me to yours. I like what I see and know I will be back for more! Best regards, Mary
I really like the “Exploration of Joy” with a remarkable combination of thoughts and images on your blog. – Thanks for stopping by.
RK, we have a similar philosophy. My mentors are found in the past. Eleanore R., B Franklin, Barbara Stanwyck….
The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin is on my “classics to read” list.
I adore Ben. I love his Autobiography! He was such a Renaissance man. He’s my favorite founding father.
Thank you for finding my Through Jersey Eyes blog because it led me to yours and I am looking forward to looking around at all your interesting posts. The first one I saw was about David McCullough… don’t you absolutely love him. Great writer, truly nice person, smart and interesting and has a fabulous speaking voice. I met him once at a book signing on Martha’s Vineyard where he lives.. it was really an honor to speak with him.
Going to go look at your list of movie favorites now 🙂
How great for you to have met David McCullough! Both his books and his life are such an inspiration to me. John Adams is my favorite of his books.
I really enjoyed looking around both your MV and NJ blogs. Thanks for coming my mine.
Great space you have created here. Looking forward to following along.
Thank you so much for the kind words.

It’s been years since my wife and I have been to San Francisco. Enjoyed your photos. Your images show a wonderful eye for interesting visuals and details. So many stunning images. Looking forward to see your posts in the future. – Thanks for stopping by my blog as well.
That’s so nice- thank you!
What a fascinating idea!
Well, Thank You!
My parents also divorced when I was a boy and thereafter I didn’t see much of my father, so I can definitely relate – although, unlike you, I didn’t idolize him. Nonetheless, I agree 100% that the importance of a father in a boy’s life cannot be overstated. It took me a long time to get past that, but with the help of “substitutes” like some of the greats you mention, you eventually find your way.
Thank you for stopping by Storyteller. — Ray

Thanks so much for your kind words and the blog nomination. I hope you don’t mind if I decline. I do enjoy your blog, and so many others, that I would have a hard time choosing which ones to nominate. Again, thanks!
I understand. That’s why I made it optional. I sometimes feel like a spammer when I do these.
