VocareMentor is a combination of “mentor,” for the most part referring to guys in general (being a guy, I address guys mostly), and the Latin “vocare,” which means “to call” – addressing men, their lives, their dreams, their self-image, their calling.

Who better to give advice than some of the greats: in history, from Abraham Lincoln to Martin Luther King, John Adams to Teddy Roosevelt, and in culture, from John Grisham to Shakespeare, Mark Twain to Errol Flynn to Humphrey Bogart.

A lot of this site comes out of the way I grew up. My parents were divorced when I was 6 years old and I didn’t see much of my father. I idolized him, but of course I had no understanding of how the lack of his presence in my life affected every choice I made as I grew up. Much of my adult life has been attempting to sort things out and catch up.

The importance of the father or a father figure in a boy’s life cannot be overstated. And the impact of other men through each stage of life is immense.

Thus, this is what you will find here – musings, thoughts, wisdom and ideas from history and pop culture. Themes: mentors, father/son, male/female, self-discovery, courage, stepping up, friendship and more. We never stop learning. In every stage of our lives, we all need people to come along side to offer friendship, input, advice, counsel, instruction, guidance, and encouragement. My blog will cover all this – humbly offering some things to think about, and maybe with a bit of humor.
